Libero Alexey Verbov lifts the trophy of the Russian Cup after Zenit Kazan claimed the title for the third year running.
Lausanne, Switzerland, December 17, 2016 - Zenit Kazan have claimed their third straight and sixth overall men's Cup title in Russia, after edging Lokomotiv Novosibirsk 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-17) in the final of the 2016 "Konstantin Reva" Russian Cup.
USA's Matt Anderson led Zenit in the final on 19 points with Cuban-born Wilfredo Leon contributing another 17. Nikolay Pavlov and Lukash Divish scored 14 each for Lokomotiv.
Matt Anderson reaches high to try and beat the triple block of Lukash Divish, Alexey Samoylenko and Kawika Shoji in the Russian Cup final Saturday afternoon.It was the first set that Zenit dropped in the week-long Final Six in Surgut, after straight set wins in pool play over Fakel Nony Urengoy 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) and Lokomotiv Novosibirsk 3-0 (25-1, 25-19, 25-23), plus a semifinal sweep of Dinamo Moscow 3-0 (25-18, 30-28, 25-23).
Previously on the closing day Belgorie Belgorod had defeated Dinamo Moscow 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23) for the bronze medal, with Dmitriy Muserskiy and Roman Danilov sharing to scoring honours on 16 points each.
The competition is named after Konstantin Reva (1921-1997), a two-time world champion and two-time European champion with the Soviet Union.
Zenit Kazan, two-time FIVB Club World Championship silver medallists in 2015 and 2016, still have obligations to close the year, set to host French champions Paris Volley in the Tatarstan capital on Wednesday for the European Champions League, followed by a Superleague clash at home against Dinamo Krasnodar on 25 December.
The Final Four of the Women's Cup "Givi Akhvlediani" will close the year in Russia with Dinamo Moscow taking on Yenisei Krasnoyarsk and hosts Dinamo Kazan facing Proton Saratov in the semifinals on 27 December. The bronze medal match and final will follow on 28 December. The reigning cup holders Dinamo Krasnodar were knocked out by Proton in the previous round.
