Trentino 4th in Italian Supercup ahead of Club Worlds

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 25, 2016 - Azimut Modena won the men's Del Monte Supercup today at home before 5,300 fans, outlasting Sir Safety Conad Perugia 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-222, 24-26, 17-15) in the competition which marks the start of the season in Italy.

Cucine Lube Civitanova took third place with a 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 20-18) win over Diatec Trentino, ahead of the latter's appearance in the 2016 FIVB Club World Championship next month in Betim.

France's Earvin Ngapeth led Modena with 20 points, with Serbia's Nemanja Petric, the tournament's MVP, close behind him in the scoring on 19. Top scorer of the final was Ivan Zaytsev with 23 points in his first appearance Perugia after transferring from Dinamo Moscow.

In the bronze medal match Bulgaria's Tsvetan Sokolov scored 24 points for Lube, with Trentino's Jan Stokr of the Czech Republic bagging 22.

Previously, in the semifinals, Modena had edged Trentino 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23) and Lube had knocked out Perugia 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 31-29, 25-19).

Trentino, a record four-time world champion, is in Pool B together with Argentina's Bolivar and UPCN San Juan, and Brazil's Minas Tenis Clube for the 18-23 October FIVB Club World Championship.

The Italian A1 League begins on 2 October.
