Semifinals taking shape as Sada Cruzeiro lead the way at FIVB Men’s Club World Champs

Sada Cruzeiro's Sergio Nogueira celebrates with his teammates as his side nearly reached semifinals on the very second day of play

Betim, Brazil, October 19, 2016 - As the only team with two wins on their back, defending champions Sada Cruzeiro nearly snatched a semifinal berth at FIVB Men’s Club World Championship after Wednesday action. Argentina’s Bolívar and Italy’s Trentino achieved wins on their opening games.

Brazilian kings Sada Cruzeiro were outstanding to defeat Tala’ea El-Geish in three sets in the final game of Day 2, earning a result that leaves them only waiting for mathematical confirmation of their semifinals place. There’s probably no better way for them to prepare for the next game - a rematch of 2015 final game against Russia’s Zenit Kazan.

Before that, Bolívar gave a big shock to UPCN in an Argentinean classical game, the first of the tournament that went further than three sets. With a solid display on serving and blocking, the team that lost the title at their local league precisely on the hands of UPCN, this time was able to smile after four periods of battle. It was such a close contest that the three sets won by Bolívar are so far the ones with highest scores of the competition.

Also on Pool B, Trentino delivered a straight-set defeat to host Minas Tenis Clube, which did it better than the previous match but still wasn’t enough for a win. European vice-champions showed enough ability to stop Minas’ pressure at key moments and climb atop of the pool as the only team there yet to drop a set.

Without a doubt, the main dish on Day 3 will be the astonishing clash between Sada Cruzeiro and Zenit Kazan, a vital game for the race to finish first at Pool A. Before this amazing duel scheduled at 8 PM (local), World Champs debutants Taichung Bank and Tala’ea El-Geish are meant to open Thursday program at 3 PM (local), followed by Trentino against Bolívar at 5.30 PM (local).
